Heartworm disease is deadly, to both cats and dogs. Furthermore, heartworm disease is so easily prevented.
Given the information we discussed last week about heartworm preventive resistance and the importance of giving doses on schedule year-round, another important issue arises.
We have long advocated semiannual heartworm testing, and, with the specter of heartworms looming over us, being able to catch heartworm infestations early gives us a huge advantage. Being able to begin treatment before substantial damage is done to the heart, lungs and pulmonary arteries helps dogs recover from heartworm disease faster, and greatly reduces the likelihood of complications during treatment.
And, remember: administer your pet’s heartworm preventive on the same day, every month.
See you tomorrow, Dr. Randolph.
